Cecil Sharp 100th Celebration

October 06 - 08, 2017

In 1917, the founding father of the folk-song and dance revival, Cecil Sharp, visited Pine Mountain Settlement School. On the terrace of the original Far House, Sharp and his assistant Maud Karpeles witnessed a dance that changed his understanding of the relationship of English Country dance to folk dance in America. The two observed the Kentucky Running Set being performed, marking a milestone in the revival of folk dance in America. The dance was far outside the English Country Dance repertoire and became a cornerstone of their exploration of dance in the Southern Appalachians. For the 100th anniversary of Sharp's visit, we celebrate the dance form that would forever couple English country dancing and the dance forms of America's Appalachian region. There will be performances and workshops by local musicians and dancers, live music from Sunrise Ridge, and performances by the acclaimed Berea College Country Dancers and the Berea Festival Dancers. There will also be an exhibition of Cecil Sharp's Appalachian photographs on display for the first time in the United States.
